We regret to tell you that we have decided to end Flashguns. After five years it's come to a point where we feel like we need to move on as musicians and people. We have loved every minute of it, but this feels like the right decision. We are sure many people will be disappointed, especially after the recent release of our debut album. All we can say is that when we started this band we wanted it to last forever, but unfortunately that is no longer possible. another cover for you lover(s). this time a remake of dolly parton and kenny rogers' 1983 hit. seems like this cover was released all the way back in april 2008. i guess i missed that train, but i've lucky managed to find myself on the return leg. it's a nice collaboration between canadians; feist and constantines.

so i've mentioned dolly and kenny, but what most people don't know is that "islands in the stream" was actually written by the bee gees.

A couple of weeks ago I was pointed in the direction of Oliver Tank who likes to "make music using computers". A new fairly new act hailing from sunny Sydney. He definitely has some very interesting tracks on his soundcloud, which seem perfect for a sunday afternoon's listening. Songs such as "Drifting Apart" have a real chilled vibe - imagine if mogwai got hold of a computer and the computer gave birth to a floppy-disk (maybe, the comparison works and maybe it doesn't - whatever, music is what you make it).

Dawn Golden & Rosy Cross recently recorded the Crows’ “Colorblind,” a song from 1999′s This Desert Life that was featured prominently in the film Cruel Intentions. So what’s the reason for getting behind the Crows? Is there just not enough Crow love these days?

“There really isn’t a good answer for this,” Dawn Golden principle Dexter Tortoriello tells Hive. “When I was a kid I despised that ‘Mr. Jones’ song and really never heard anything else of theirs. ‘Colorblind’ was a track that really surprised me. The lyrics are incredibly poignant, and the composition was simple and pretty.” Tortoriello transforms the rather straight forward rock tune into something haunting while retaining elements of the original melody. “As most of my songs come about, I was sitting in my bedroom playing piano and it just sort of happened,” he says. “I wanted to add an intensity to the song that isn’t really there in the original, which is where the screeching feedback and distorted synthesizers came into play. My main goal is to take the more abrasive elements of music and noise and present them as a means to summon beauty and despair in a way they usually don’t.”

Frenchman, Anthony Gonzalez (M83), will be releasing a double long playing al-BUM in october. If you like smoking and cars captured at warp-speeds then this song is for you; however if you don't like smoking or warp-speed galaxy effects then I'd probably suggest a beyonce music video or something. This is hazed electronic pop at one of its finer moments.

I've only watched the video about five times - I'd like to make it six, but I've got a sudden urge for a fag.

a bit like Beach House in vocals + Joy Formidable in guitars, Deaf Club awaken your lull with their bass+drums in what can only be described as a brooding manner. The comparison to other bands makes you a bit nostalgic for something that probably never was, but it's good stuff all the same.

Overall, it's a nice first EP, with glimmers of promise,

but skip "It, She", i think that one's a bit shite, or don't skip it, but you'll probably agree with me.

It's been a bit of a struggle finding an act to follow up blood orange, as it was a bit of a man-crush.

Anyway, i knew i just had to move on and i think this tensnake remix of little dragon's ritual union is a perfect way. tensnake have slowed the tempo slightly and stripped the song down to its bare necessities, so as to control your head-bops per second. OH and these guys are Swedish.. surprise surprise.

Washed Out's (Ernest Greene) first full length playing album (Within and Without) is set for release on 12th July on Sub Pop. I had a wee listen to it yesterday on t'internet. Within and Without has a very different feel musically, in comparison, to his previous EP releases, which were "a lot" more upbeat or better yet had a jazzy vibe. Personally, I prefer some of his older works, but that doesn't mean his new album isn't a work of wonder. What I like about his music is that you can see a progression of his moods, in the different tracks, across all of his albums. There aren't enough superlatives for Within and Without, so I'll just say fuck me it's good!

Oh and some interesting facts- he recently got married and is good pals with Chaz (Toro Y Moi). Actually, I guess they're not that interesting as facts go, but I just had to share the juicy gossip with someone... anyone...

this came up in my search for something new, as i've been quite disappointed with the music of june. it's quite strange. extremely lo-fi vocals, so much so that you can't really hear them, but i think it's the chimy chimes and punchy drums that make this good. imagine if the abominable snowman made his ice cave into a studio, actually there's no need to imagine - just listen to glass bubbles.

Alec Koone (Balam Acab) at the tender age of 19 makes chillingly-eerie, yet wonderful music. The sound is synonymous of his label, Tri Angle Records. I can't say enough good things about this guy. His album WANDER / WONDER is due for release August 29th, so be sure to circle that date in your calendar.

investigation discovery (I.D.), is from heartsrevolution's free mixtape, which will be available from may 30th 2011 (via their website). apparently, the mixtape is a prelude to their new Ride or Die LP.

if investigation discovery is anything to go by then they've got a really nice fresh sound; less gameboy glitch and more hip-hop beat and punchy lyrics.

sometimes, listening to artists that never "made it" leaves me with a warm feeling. Not out of spite, nor malice. Simply because it reminds me that the music world is a fickle one, where meritocracy doesn't always rule.

so, although this bloke might suddenly spring back into somebody's view at some point in the future, i kind of hope he doesn't.

he's not particularly a-mazing, but it's a nice take on a rather over-played song + that's enough to please me.

i use the genre "witch-house" sparingly, because i know that the artists that produce this kind of music don't particular like that label, mainly due to the connotations of the term. i guess the sound is extremely lo-fi with a soothing bpm. there is something very unique in the types of sounds that are produced, whilst evoking the feeling of familiarity.

i think ready for the world by how to dress well is a perfect introduction into a new genre, though we have blogged about visions of trees (who are also a part of this new wave in music), but in comparison they've followed a more poppy route.
